Sweet Flag (Acorus Calamus) is a semiaquatic herb with a long,
aromatic, creeping rootstock producing shoots of erect, swordlike
leaves up to 6 ft (2m) in length. The rootstock contains an essential
oil responsible for the plant's medicinal value. Sweet Flag is a plant
that grows well in cold climates and does best in damp or wet,
swampy ground.
The Cree of Canada had numerous medicinal uses for the plant
including to fight the effects of fatigue or exhaustion, to prevent
and help cure a hangover and even claimed that chewing the
fresh root enabled them to "travel great distances without
touching the ground". This plant is sometimes called Cree Calamus.
